Service Dogs for those with Invisible Disabilities
We all know how much dogs and pets can drive our emotional well-being. However, for those struggling with disabilities, such as Autism, Diabetes, PTSD, and Seizure disorders, dogs can do even more. Service Dogs by Warren Retrievers (SDWR) is a non-profit organization committed to changing the lives of those living with invisible disabilities. One of HomeTown Bank’s team members, Tanya Donothan is currently raising money for a service dog from SDWR to help her son, Taylin who struggles with Autism.
From day one, Taylin Donathan has expressed himself at the highest volumes he could, whether happy or sad. As time went by, his hair grew in unimaginable fashion and into a cockatoo type Mohawk. This earned him his “Angry Bird” nickname. After not reaching many development milestones, the Donothans received the difficult to accept Autism diagnosis. While Taylin’s made some progress in therapy since his diagnosis, there is still a long way to go and a service dog was recommended to the family to help him cope, grow, and become more independent.
Until there’s a cure, there’s a dog.
The motto Until there’s a cure, there’s a dog, expresses why SDWR does what they do. Autism Service Dogs can provide a calming effect with their presence and help those they serve, like Taylin, find structure and independence in day to day life. They’ve been shown to improve the quality of lives of those with invisible disabilities. However, highly trained service dogs come with a cost. So with the help of family and friends, the Donathans are holding some fundraisers in the area to bring a service dog to their family.
Naturally, when a member of the HomeTown Bank family is facing a challenge, we want to help. The Donathans need to raise $25,000 and have some fundraisers planned to do just that. The fundraisers for “Angry Bird” are listed below. You may also visit his fundraising page to learn more about Taylin, SDWR, or to make a donation. Tanya helps you in advance for any help to “get a happy puppy for an angry bird.”
